Mary L. Durham, PhD

Mary L Durham, PhD, served as director of the Center for Health Research and vice president of research for Kaiser Permanente from 1995 to 2016. In addition to her leadership roles, Dr. Durham conducted her own research on workplace health and translational research. She has designed and conducted many research studies with employers as partners in the research. Dr. Durham has worked with state and federal lawmakers in crafting policy-level decisions across a wide range of topics, such as privacy, mental health law, genetics, research, and human subjects protection. She was a Commissioner for the State of Oregon’s Senate Commission for Health Care Access and Affordability. She served as a medical sociologist whose work focused on the health care of people with chronic, disabling conditions, especially those with severe mental disorders. She has designed and evaluated programs to enhance the health and functional status of older persons in HMOs and was principal investigator of National Institute of Drug Abuse coordinating center for the Oregon Clinical Treatment Network. She was a professor in the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at the Oregon Health & Science University, and adjunct professor in the Department of Sociology at Portland State University.
