Prior to this position, he was a senior scientist at the Institute for Health Research and co-directed the Center for Health Dissemination and Implementation Research at Kaiser Permanente Colorado. Prior to this his role at Kaiser Permanente, he was professor of communications and director of graduate studies in the School of Communication Studies at Ohio University, on the faculty of Michigan State University, and a visiting faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley, and at the University of Michigan. He studies how to strategically use concepts of innovation diffusion to accelerate the spread of evidence-based practices, programs, and policies. He studied under and worked closely with Everett M. Rogers for 20 years. Currently, Dearing is also an advisor to the NSF ADVANCE Program, the Dartmouth School of Medicine, and the NSF Study Get the Facts Out project.  He is on the US Environmental Protection Agency National Advisory Council for Policy and Technology, and the Michigan Chapter of the Environmental Law and Policy Center.
